All Indian e-commerce sites have been cautioned by the Department of Telecom (DoT) not to sell wireless jammers and wireless boosters there. The government organization has warned both e-commerce companies and the general public to avoid using such devices. In a statement, the department stressed that private sector companies and individuals are not permitted to buy or use jammers in India and that using cellular signal jammers, GPS blockers, or other signal jamming devices is “usually prohibited, except specifically permitted by Government of India.”
The DoT noted in a release that signal jamming devices cannot be advertised, sold, distributed, imported, or otherwise marketed in India unless specifically authorised by the aforementioned rules.
It’s important to note that the Department of Telecom warned every e-commerce site in the nation, including Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeals, Shopclues, Ebay, Alibaba, Aliexpress, IndiaMart, and Rediff, against “illegally facilitating the sale of wireless jammers” on their platforms back in January of this year.
The notice had stated at the time that “the Government authorities have come to notice that the online e-commerce platforms are facilitating the sale of wireless jammers which are capable of interrupting the authorised telecom and other wireless networks.” In light of the foregoing, it had stated that “all e-commerce portals and offline dealers are hereby advised against sale and purchase of all kinds of wireless devices/equipment without ensuring proper compliance to provisions of ITA, 1885 & IWTA, 1993; failing which legal action under these acts, IT Act, 2000 and any other security guidelines/provisions, shall be initiated.”
The department reiterated in its most recent circular that appropriate action will be taken if e-commerce platforms and people break these standards while citing its earlier notice.
The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) applauded the DoT’s notice, saying that it will raise people’s awareness.
“We appreciate the Department of Telecommunications’ advice to address the problems brought on by the installation of signal boosters and repeaters. The Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1933 and the India Telegraph Act of 1885 both make it illegal and punitive for anybody to purchase, sell, install, or possess Mobile Signal Boosters (MSBs). According to Director General Lt Gen Dr SP Kochhar in a statement to BGR India, “This advisory will assist promote awareness and make citizens aware of the crippling impact that repeaters have on the whole network.”
